Ingredients
  

Devil's Food Cake Mix:

  • 2 c flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 c cocoa
  • 1/2 c hot water
  • 3/4 c butter
  • 1.5 c sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 c buttermilk

Filling:

  • 3/4 c sugar
  • 5 oz evaporated milk
  • 1/2 c butter or margarine
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2/3 c shortening

Frosting:

  • 5 tbsp butter or margarine
  • 1/3 c cocoa
  • 2 c powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tbsp water

Instructions
 

Cake bottom

  • Mix flour, baking soda, salt and cocoa, in a small bowl and set aside.
  • Mix hot water, butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk in large mixing bowl.
  • Gradually add flour mixture and mix until well blended.
  • Grease and flour 9 x 13" pan.
  • Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until center is dry when poking with toothpick.
  • Let cake cool and prepare filling.

Filling

  • Combine sugar, butter, vanilla, milk, and shortening.
  • Beat for 10-15 minutes until light and fluffy.
  • Spread on cooled cake.

Frosting

  • Mix butter, cocoa, vanilla, powdered sugar, and water in medium bowl.
  • Beat until smooth.
  • Spread over filling and chill. (You may need to add a little more water to thin the frosting.)
