Devil's Food Cake Mix:
- 2 c flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 c cocoa
- 1/2 c hot water
- 3/4 c butter
- 1.5 c sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/4 c buttermilk
Filling:
- 3/4 c sugar
- 5 oz evaporated milk
- 1/2 c butter or margarine
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 2/3 c shortening
Frosting:
- 5 tbsp butter or margarine
- 1/3 c cocoa
- 2 c powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 tbsp water
Cake bottom
Mix flour, baking soda, salt and cocoa, in a small bowl and set aside.
Mix hot water, butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk in large mixing bowl.
Gradually add flour mixture and mix until well blended.
Grease and flour 9 x 13" pan.
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until center is dry when poking with toothpick.
Let cake cool and prepare filling.
Filling
Combine sugar, butter, vanilla, milk, and shortening.
Beat for 10-15 minutes until light and fluffy.
Spread on cooled cake.
Frosting
Mix butter, cocoa, vanilla, powdered sugar, and water in medium bowl.
Beat until smooth.
Spread over filling and chill. (You may need to add a little more water to thin the frosting.)
